Our newest addition at Flatbrook, we call him Big, for his huge attitude
and after the Mr.
Big character in the HBO hit series Sex in the City. Big is killer
handsome with a sweet, gentile and friendly temperament. His conformation
is well within the
AKC Standard,
standing 23” at the
withers and weighing 67 pounds.
He
has his fathers head and great face as well as his top line and
movement. In addition he has his mothers terrific coat – dense medium harsh and striking overall appearance. The results from his
first show, the 2006 Griffon National Specialty, was the highlight of a week for all of
us at Flatbrook Sporting Dogs. Big showing in Arkansas was our 1st
indication of his unlimited potential as
a show dog. But for most of 2007 we only showed Big in the
conformation ring a couple of times to gain experience and confidence.
At nine months and
with limited training Big finished his Junior Hunter title in Arkansas the
day before the National Specialty show. He has good instincts, a great nose
and covers ground efficiently. He is very athletic with a strong desire to
please. Big’s first hunting trip went well—highlighted by us missing shots
on his first point of a pheasant, but he tracked it down several 100 yards
away, relocated and pointed it again. That time I didn't miss and he
retrieved it to my hand. We’re currently training for his
UD and
his AKC Senior Hunter title. We believe Big will mature into a
good hunting dog, time will tell if he reaches his father level of
competence in the field. But he is off to a great start.
Big came to us as a
result of a repeat breeding of Byrnie and Rag’s. The first litter produced
several wonderful dogs (in particular CH Royal Point Prince Rainier, BJ and
Ch Royal Point Princess Grace
Tipper and we really
liked her pedigree. The introduction of Rags’, Big’s dame, bloodline brings
nice diversification to Flatbrook. Rag’s is ½ French, the fathers of both her
sire, CH Mickey De Baron JH, NA PII (Mick) and dam, CH Birdfinder's SnowBird,
UPT PIII (Sophie) are French imports. Both Mick and Sophie are wonderful
hunting dogs. I’ve had the pleasure of hunting wild pheasant in Kansas with
Mick and he is a stud, his only handicap was our shooting. Mick’s littermate
is VC CH Alibi’s Montana Gold MH, Buddy. Buddy won the 2005 AWPGA Capitain
Fraccesse Award as the best hunting dog/show dog combination.
It was this nice
combination of pedigrees, the sound dogs from the prior litter and Big’s
puppy evaluation that convinced us that he just might fit in well with our
goals. We are more than delighted with him, and look forward to his
development in the field, in the conformation ring and hopefully as a Stud
dog.
In late August of 2007 we had pups &
could not attend the AWPGA National's in Washington State. So we
sent Big with Jen Holmberg to be shown. Jen did a wonderful job
and Big repeated as Winner's Dog and Best of Winners for his second
major toward his conformation championship a week later, Bit finished
his CH with a Group 3 placement from the classes. While Big is
still young and somewhat immature, we decided to special him for the
first several months of 2008 to test his potential. Time will tell
if he becomes a top show dog like many of his forebears.
